Breaking the Silence: Teaching the Next Generation About Mental Illness (NAMI)

An overview of the lesson plans approved for use in the Palm Beach County Schools. The plans are written for use in the classroom and are available at three levels: elementary, middle and high school. Lesson plans are provided for users by the Boca Raton Community Hospital Foundation. www.btslessonplans.org

Red Flags in Children’s Behavior (NAMI, Cuyahoga Falls)

Receive the Red Flags booklet (English or Spanish). View a video of the Depression Awareness Program for middle school children, created for use by school systems to identify signs and symptoms of childhood depression among children and adolescents, teachers and family members. www.redflags.org

More Than Sad: Teen Depression

This 20 minute film aims to educate high school students about depression. Since the majority of suicides are caused by untreated or inadequately treated depression, it is the hoped that teaching adolescents to recognize the signs of depression in themselves and others, more will seek help and treatment. www.afsp.org

The Truth About Suicide: Real Stories of Depression in College

Preview this 27-minute film which presents a recognizable picture of depression and other problems commonly experienced by college students and other young adults. Filming took place on a number of different campuses to focus on people who have been personally touched by student depression and suicide. www.afsp.org

Communities in Palm Beach County are organizing !

Congratulations to the new Boynton Beach Mental Health Initiative. With leadership from Gerda Klein and Lorraine Michaelis the new coalition of 10 mental health professionals and community advocates have opened a door. They requested and received a proclamation from the City of Boynton Beach recognizing Mental Health month (see attached). The group has been meeting monthly.
